Universal Waste
EMI is a universal waste CONSOLIDATION
FACILITY and as such is in full compliance with the requirements for universal waste storage and labeling in accordance with Chapter 850, Section 3A (13) of the Maine H.W. regulations.
EMI is permitted to accept
the following Universal Wastes:
- Batteries, including Nickel Cadmium, Metal Hydride, small sealed lead acid, Lithium, Mercuric Oxide and Silver Oxide button batteries. (NOT vehicle batteries which should be managed through the battery deposit system, or if leaking, as hazardous waste)
- Cathode Ray Tubes, including video display components of computer monitors, televisions and other display devices
- Certain lamps containing mercury or lead, including fluorescent, high intensity discharge, neon, mercury vapor, high pressure sodium and metal halide bulbs
- Mercury-containing thermostats including temperature control devices that contain mercury
- Totally enclosed, non-leaking, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) ballasts.

Proper
shipping papers must accompany all Universal Wastes received at EMI.
The State of Maine requires the use of The Uniform Bill of
Lading (UBOL) for all shipments of Universal Waste (click

Acceptance,
Treatment and Disposal of This
Waste Stream
Universal wastes must be packed with adequate packing materials to prevent breakage during storage, handling and transportation.
No Universal Wastes will be accepted at EMI facility without prior
approval by the facility manager. Only shipments received
by properly licensed, EMI approved transporters, will be
accepted at the facility.
Universal Wastes are
consolidated at the EMI facility prior to offsite shipment
to properly licensed recycling facilities.
